“Reminiscent of two iconic design eras, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, Eclectica Design and Art presents an exhibition that returns to the aims of creating accessible and interactive experiences of art and design works. Key to both Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements was the pairing of art and design on a single level, incorporating aspects of either practice alongside and within the other. Featuring a strong cohort of emerging and established artists working in South Africa, this exhibition challenges our understanding of contemporary making and creating by working in conversation across art and design. Rather than locating artistic practice in isolation, the understanding of art for this exhibition is made to incorporate the intricate practice of design and functional creating. Reaching across and around global categories and international boarders, the work featured broaches art and design through practices of integrity, intricacy and opulence. Confronting the design eras of the past and querying how to push the boundaries of what is possible, Global Reaching calls back into focus the leveling of art and design on one platform for interaction.“
